STORY
This story begins with a very large family living in Belfort, France in the 1800's. Members of the family are documented in 3 separate censuses - an 1836 census, an 1851 census, and an 1856 census.

All told, the members of the family were as follows, with Find-a-Grave links in {brackets} and descendant families listed in [brackets]:

  • b. 1803 - Maurice Aron Levy {FG}
  • b. 1812 - Esther Levy (maiden name Picard)

  • b. 1833 - Adele Levy {FG} - married Jacob Michel {FG}
  • b. 1836 - Philippe Levy
  • b. 1837 - Abraham Levy {FG} - married Julia Kern {FG} - [Mandel, Courtney, Felsecker, Van Senus, Dunn, Hanink families]
  • b. 1839 - Julie Levy - married Henry G Hebert - [Grunsfeld, McIlroy families]
  • b. 1841 - Cecile Levy {FG} - married the same Jacob Michel(!) {FG} - [Herriff, Amos, Van Gorp, Ries, Goodman families]
  • b. 1842 - Arthur Levy
  • b. 1843 - Isidore Levy {FG}
  • b. 1846 - Louis Levy {FG} - married Esther Deutschlam {FG} - [Purwin, Zobel, Harris, Dollinger families]
  • b. 1848 - Adeline Levy {FG} - married Leon Strauss {FG} - [Chernis, Weinberg, Lovell, Richards families]
  • b. 1849 - Louise Levy {FG} - married Harry Peiser {FG} - [Kelly, Gumbiner, Rafshoon, Bernstein, Heaps, Rothenberg families]
  • b. 1852 - Emilie Levy
  • b. 1854 - Lucie Levy
Note that the 1856 census lists Esther Levy as a widow, taking care of 10 children in the household at the time(!)

There was also a Eugene A. Levy, born in 1831, noted to be a brother of L.F. Levy and uncle to Marcelle Strauss/Frank/Grunsfeld in various newspaper articles.

Many of the children listed above ended up in the United States, entering through New Orleans. Some are buried in New Orleans cemeteries...
